love this book!
I found it slow to start with and thought it would take me forever to get through, but then when they were locked in the attic I couldn’t put it down! It was a fantastic read, I’m going to purchase the next one now.

An interesting story
A book full of twists and turns. It can be a bit tricky as it can cause flashbacks to a person.

Emotional roller-coaster with attitude
'God wouldn't see. He'd closed his eyes to everything the day Jesus was put on the cross 'This has to be one of the most compelling books I've ever read. I didn't want to pick it up, yet once I had I never wanted to put it down. It was also one of the most horrifying. Not because of what the children did--they were innocents, thrust into the most impossible of situations--but because of the emotions it aroused in me. I often wanted to cry for Cathy, Chris and the twins, but the tears turned to those of anger.I've read many books, and disliked many characters, but never have I felt hate such as I felt for the hypocritical old witch who masquerades as being God-fearing while showing not one shred of love, mercy or compassion, or any other component of humanity or Christianity. I wanted to kill her--not a merciful or quick death by bullet or blade, but--after beating her to within an inch of her life with her own willow-wand--to lock her in a windowless attic, with water but no food, to keep her alive to slowly starve to death. In short, to let her suffer the horrors which she inflicts on children whose only crime was to be born. Whatever else they do is down to her--and her daughter, who initially invites compassion which she loses through her worthless behaviour. May they both rot in literary hell--or get what they deserve in one of the following books.Author V C Andrews has written in just the right style for her subject. Meticulous details are given of the things the children do, the fake flowers they make, the books they read, their growing awareness of their own bodies. In other books I'd find such detail tedious, but when four children are imprisoned in a couple of rooms, these things are the major and meaningful events of their days, symbolised by the real flowers, the mice, the dolls' house. It's a wonderful work of literary gothic-horror, as well as an emotional roller-coaster. As to the outcome--I leave you to make your own judgement. Ten stars out of five.

One was enough
I read this book fully expecting to want to go straight out and buy the rest of the series, but after finishing it, I've decided that just this is enough for me.As the story goes, it is fairly interesting, and pleasantly dark (I'd always assumed that Virginia Andrews books would be a bit "fluffy") - but I personally found it very difficult to care about the characters, who are very one dimensional. The plot seems to be fairly well known from reading other reviews, but without giving any spoilers for those who haven't read it, I found it to be very predictable as it went along, and at times so entirely unbelievable that it really was difficult to get into the story at all. Some of the things the characters do are so incomprehensible that it does take a great deal of suspension of belief! There is some controversy (milder now, I assume) over the sexual content of the book. Whilst it is taboo, it really is a very minor part of it and shouldn't put you off from reading, even if you are concerned you'll find it offensive. It doesn't take a long time to read, so I wouldn't completely dismiss it offhand, but unless very dramatic family sagas are absolutely your thing, there are countless books I would recommend before reading this one.

wow wow wow
Haven’t read this book in years since I was a teenager and had forgot how good it was . If you haven’t read it I highly recommend it . What appears to be a normal family hide a huge secret . Their life’s are ticking along nicely until disaster strikes the family and the father dies . They lose everything and with no money to survive the mother has no choice but to go home to her parents but that comes with its own tragic consequences for both the mother and her four children .For the mother who was disinherited by her parents because of what she did in the past and for her children a lonely , shocking life locked away from all they know and love and painful lessons learnt by their grandmother .Highly recommend this book it has very long chapters but you won’t want to put it down

A simultaniously heartbreaking and warming story
This story breaks your heart over and over, but also delivers heartwarming love, devotion and determination. This book tells the story about the Dollenganger childrens horrible ordeal being kept hidden in an attic, removed from the World, with only eachothers love to hang on to.A story of how much you can actually overcome, teach yourself and survive even if you are only children having to look after eachother.Virginia Andrews writes so you feel like you are there. You can feel their pain, their fear, their disbelief, their dispair and their determination.A remarcable read and a sure fire favourite on your bookshelf.

Great book; it made me reflect about my attitude toward life
I found the story very interesting due to the way the main characters reacted to the circumstances that life presented to them.
