NieR:Automata: Long Story Short: 1

Adds to the game experience. Amazing.
This book features the same story as the game Nier: Automata, it takes out the fights and expands on the meat of the story. It re-arranges the game narrative and spends a lot of time on character development, for example, we get to see 2B, Adam & Eve, A2 and 9's perspective of things. In the game, the feelings of characters are often left vague, or perhaps, open to interpretation, but this book goes deep into their thoughts processes and feelings which made the experience even more impactful to me. I was glued to it from start to finish. Nier's story can be confusing as we all know, but with the book, I found it easy to solidify the when and where of events in my mind.My only criticism, there are spelling mistakes in the book, for example, mistaking '9S' for '9B'. The book itself, it started to curl when it was a particularly humid day. I've moved it to a drier room in the house and it's been fine since. However I noticed that one of the glossy illustrated pages at the start has...rubbed off? No idea how or why. Still, I LOVED the game and wanted to immerse myself in the characters again, so to me this was a fantastic buy.

Great book but don't buy from here
The book itself is great. However I wouldn't recommend buying from Amazon. I recieved mine with damaged, cut and folded pages from where it hadn't been handled with care. I like to display my collection so it's quite annoying for me

An addition to the game
It gives a more insightful telling of the game story from different perspectives like Adam and Eve. Not exactly something you'd totally need in addition to the game but it is a good enough read.

A difficult read
The entire way through you get the feeling the translator and editor (if it had one of those, it's that bad) just didn't care. In addition big portions of the book don't really add anything to what we already know from the game, just bits and pieces where you go "oh that's interesting".I hesitate to say any of it doesn't make sense because it is clear the translation hasn't done the writer justice. Not 1 star as in the end there are some parts I find insightful and funny and a couple leaving me with new questions, just a shame the quality is so poor.

Interesting read if you can look past the problems
Some nice insight into the minds of the various characters, but the writing style is very dry and there are numerous translation and editing errors. Might be worth picking up if you are a big fan of Nier:Automata and it's going for cheap.

Neither for diehard DrakeNier fans or the casual consumer
I went into this as a huge fan of the series knowing it wasn't some 'Grimoire Noir' style lore dump that expanded the universe but a simple light novel with some added elements. I was cool with that. Upon finishing it i am somewhat less cool with the extremely poor quality of the thing.Physically the paper is cheap and powdery like bargain toilet roll, the cover from the moment it was exposed to open air outside the delivery packet started to curve like it was stored in a greenhouse or something and the spine binding is really weak and pages are already coming loose. I've bought plenty of Yen Press products before and never seen one that feels so physically cheap as this. The problems continue with the content. For the most part its an extremely simplified retelling of the events of Automata with "X did the thing, they said 'i did the thing' and Y agreed they had done the thing. they both smiled" writing comparable to young adult stories based on videogame adaptations that came out in the 1990's and nowadays only get brought up when a youtuber wants to make a video having a laugh at their cheesy nature. This is compounded by constant spelling errors, name mistakes -2B gets called 2A for example- and certain tonally important lines like "this cannot continue" are changed to "this is no good!" which suggests either the writer never actually played the game or this is some very rocky translation that never had an editor look it over.So for the diehard yoko taro fan this is a let down and full of issues. For the casual reader its just telling the story of the games but in a worse way without the emotional impact of the original source material. So who can i actually recommend this to?Honestly i cannot recommend this to anyone. Its a terrible disappointment when even S.D Perry's infamous Resident Evil novels are works that put this to shame. Save your money for 'The Strange Works of Yoko Taro' instead. This sadly isn't worth your money or time.

A disappointment
The book is a fairly simplified retelling of the main plot of the game, missing out all of the side content, and some of the parts of the main storyline which aren't ultimately plot-critical, even though they add flavour and context to the world. The prose is fairly simplistic, which I'm not sure can be put down to the original writing or the translation. However, the book is marred by a number of editing errors and poor translations of some of the iconic lines from the game. All told, there's little of value here for anyone who has already completed the game.
