GOODYEAR 46741 1/2-Inch by 50-Feet Retractable Air Hose Reel [Discontinued]

I gave this a one star because I, just like allot of people report the fittings are clogged with white pipe dope and I found another BIG problem and that is false advertising which my close up photos will show. I mounted this to wall studs with a 12"x12" piece of 1/4" aluminum plate. I like to do thing once for life. The time I tried to use this was with an air ratchet. No big deal a 5/16" non rusted bolt. Initially had a great blast of power (built up in the line at 120 psi, this good operation worked for about 2 seconds and line pressure dropped off to about 30 psi, not enough to run tools at all. I did not read customer reviews prior to my purchase of this item because like others, the name "Goodyear" you figure quality Right? Well I found out after pulling this off the wall mounted above the air compressor at about 9' and dismantling the fittings sure enough, there was barely a flow hole for the air due to the over use of thread sealing compound. Upon closer inspection I see that the 1/4" line these are advertised with for air flow has been reduced to 3/16" through the use of undersized elbows and connectors. I should have known to check everything before hanging it because one of the swivel adapters they sent as a spare part for an undersized installation only had a flow size through it at 3/16", which I did not use. I purchased seprately and used a upsized adapter to kept my minimum flow at 1/4". If you were to use that adapter and even cleaning the excessive pipe dope off there would be 3 separate points at which your airflow is reduced to 3/16". I have parts on order now through Amazon to replace these undersized elbows where the 50' of hose actually attaches to the hub to the hose. These parts are upsizing to 1/2" then back down to 1/4" to have a constant airflow to my tools at 1/4" which will prevent the air drop while running tools as I have set up 2 previous shops with air compressors the same way. Shame on Goodyear for allowing their name to be placed on this item, cheaply made and sold under false pretenses. I suggest the manufacturer fulfill their advertising statements by supplying a 1/4" air flow through the 3/8" line with 1/4" NPT fittings. Had I known of this problem to begin with I probably would have ordered either a different brand or the 50' reel with 1/2" line, at least with the 1/2" line you would have 1/4" flow minimally. Also very cheep hardware used for the bolts and nuts holding it all together. See photos if I am able to up load them. You will know my photos because I have compared their setup with the 3/16" reductions and my 1/2" upsize adapter for the hose to the center hub.

I had been waiting for one of these and did a lot of research before I landed on this one. One of the main things that swayed me towards this one was it had two support arms for the reel and everything else I looked at had one. The other thing that swayed me may have been the Goodyear name and the decals on the reel itself made it more attractive than others, blue may not have been my first choice for the reel but it doesn't look too bad either, if I had to pick a color I think I may have just went with all black like a tire or maybe even red, but not sure either. Anyway there are not too many days go by that I don't use this hose reel, just love it and wished I had installed one earlier!! One small problem that I detected and it was not a big deal, there was a couple allen head bolts on the RH side where the arm attaches to the reel that had rusted for some reason, I took them out and clean them up on the wire wheel and they looked pretty good now. I should have called the vendor maybe to send me a couple but didn't think it was worth the hassle!! Again it is quality made. looks like it will last for sometime, the yellow Goodyear hose seems to be quality as well, and I just love it, could not live without it now. I got so sick of rolling air hose up when I got done with it and this eliminates that and looks good hanging on the wall too!!

Do not order the 1/2" hose version. That's what I did the first time. The reel did not retract properly. I contacted MIT to discuss the issue and was very pleased with the customer service experience. A HUMAN answered on the 2nd ring, and I was transferred to a technician to assist with the problem. He explained that some of the reels have a hard time with the 1/2" hose because it is so heavy. He suggested a couple of things to try, including following the reel tensioning instructions in the manual, but these did not help the situation: the hose still would not retract. I contacted them again and was told to return it through Amazon for a replacement. Shipping it back is pre-paid, so no big deal.I decided to get the 3/8" hose version instead since the 1/2" version was, as explained by the MIT technician, a tougher application for the reel. When the 3/8" hose arrived two days later, I was very pleased. It had plenty of tension in the spring to retract properly.Bottom line: 5 stars for the 3/8" hose reel, 1 star for the 1/2" hose reel, and 5 stars for the customer service from MIT. Do not buy the 1/2" hose reel.

Yeah, I really like this thing. Once again, thanks to you folks who reviewed this before I bought it. It made life a lot easier since I'm a lone ranger on doing stuff in the garage.I bought this as part of a new compressor gift for my retirement. It shipped right away and I knew (from the reviews) that it would be a heavy booger. I measured the backplate and installed a multi-anchored 10"x12" piece of 5/8" OSB onto the drywall. I then pulled all the hose out and was able to comfortably lift the empty reel into place and mark the four mounting holes in the OSB. I then lag-bolted the reel to the OSB. The hose end sits just about eye level and the hose moves easily. The mechanism works smoothly but I JUST installed it so it's really premature. I didn't have any of the initial problems that others had BUT I will use this as much as possible for the first 30 days, just to make sure. It appears that if there are no startup problems, you're good to go.So initial impressions are very favorable.Thanks again for the very helpful, detailed reviews.I also share the frustrations about getting anything made in the US. Years ago, I bought a "Made in USA" lift. When it arrived, I saw that the ENTIRE hydraulic mechanism/motor was made in the PRC. I've given up and just pay attention to the reviews.

Bought this for my dad. It took him 9 mths to install it because he had one already installed. When he finally installed it he's been more than happy with it. He's had many(probably 10) recoils that eventually break. This one has held up better than any so far which says alot. He'll be getting one for work now he's impressed.

Excellent quality hose and reel. Couldnt ask for better. Comes with spare seals in case you get a leak after a while (years). Only reason i did not give it 5 stars is it did not come with the leader hose as advertised.

I purchased this retractable air hose reel on Thursday July 26, 2012. I took the free shipping which is supposed to take about 7 - 10 days. I received it on Monday July 30 (2 business days). I installed it on my ceiling in the garage which took about 90 minutes due to making some adjustments on the arm. It looks great and works like a charm. I have used it at least 10 times now and I am extremely satisfied. The hose is very flexible which makes it easy to work with. I would recommend this product to all my friends.

It is a heavy duty and strong product. However, I would have like it to have the base swivel and for this price, the 6 feet hose which attached from the air reel to the compressor should have been included.
