Q: How responsive and fast are the side (thumb) buttons? i love my g602 but the side buttons don't always work reliably and quickly for my use in mobas.

Work perfectly for games and work, I use it in MMOs and MOBAs without any issues

Q: Does the thumb sit on top of the side buttons or underneath them when holding the mouse normally?

The thumb goes MOSTLY beneath the side buttons. I say mostly because the buttons have a surface shaped like a "ꟼ". The the extruded top part is likely the intended place to press but the flat portion works as well. Simply by gripping the mouse firmly will push buttons along the bottom row for any adult hand until you get accommodated to only applying pressure with the bottom half of your thumb.

Q: Does this utilize the unifying receiver, or does it have it's own receiver that only works for this specific mouse?

It doesn't work with the unifying receiver (like the one that comes with the Logitech Craft Keyboard, I'm assuming). I believe Logitech has a separate line of productivity mice that are compatible with that. The G604 does come with it's own usb WiFi receiver that nests in the mouse body when not in use. It can also use Bluetooth. Not sure if it's own usb receiver can be used by other mice though.

Q: Does it charge with a wire or just swap out the double a when it dies?

Just swap out the two AAs. Energy consumption is minimal. Hardly down after 4 months of steady use. It would have been better, however, if it was Lightspeed-compatible
